UNIT X ‘Inspirer Series’ – Andrew Brooks LECTURE

Where are your hidden spaces?

Brooks raised some interesting points of interests throughout his lecture that inspired me to think differently about the unique way in which as an artist we see the world.

For the most part, his lecture was solely based on photographic techniques and editing etc… which was aimed more at the photography students, but when talking about his hidden spaces project it was interesting to discover what other people know about that we don’t.

This simple idea led onto him creating a whole series of images of unseen places shown to him by urban explorers. However, this simple principle got me thinking about things that are everyday but remain unseen, unnoticed and hidden to the public because they are not looking for them.

This also inspired me to think about meaningless spaces and that transition of when somewhere starts to become meaningful to someone; for example through repetition, memory etc…. This is an interesting idea that could be very relevant to the city environment.
